Vent - adding events to your WordPress blog - teaser
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
I’ve now done some initial work on the plugin that I will be entering into Weblog Tools collection plugin competition this year, so I thought I would take the opportunity to post some details here.
Vent is a plugin that allows you to use the Scheduled post functionality of WordPress to add and manage future events.

Details of the next scheduled event can be displayed at the top of your blog page, as well as in a sidebar widget.
All future events can be viewed on an Event listing page, and on a “Upcoming events” sidebar widget.
You also have the option of converting past events back to standard blog posts so that they remain in the blog hierarchy.
You can specify the criteria you use to identify an event in the options panel. This means that you can still use your scheduled posts functionality for it’s intended purpose.

I’ll post more information as the development continues. I am also thinking of a possible fit into the StayPress family so StayPress will handle venues and bookings and now possibly events as well.

Sounds like a natural match - listing events is one thing, but being able to allocate a defined number of places for each event takes it to a whole new level.

I’m usually just a lurker here, so hi for the first time. This sounds like an amazingly useful plugin. I design a lot of sites for performers, and it’s been a challenge to keep their gigs on the sites in a useful way. This plugin would really help. I’d like to put in a suggestion that you think about making it MU compatible from the get-go.
Thanks.

Looking forward to hearing more about this as it progresses as I’ve never been completely happy with existing events plugins.

@Michael Mahoney: Hi Michael, thanks for the comments. I’ve already put the code in place that will allow the system to be run in MU either from the standard plugins directory or the mu-plugins directory.

@Barry: As it happens, I’ve decided not to attend the WordCamp UK event because they’ve made a real mess of organising it, so, I won’t be able to demo StayPress there for you.
I am still very interested in helping to roadtest it, though.

I’ve tried many event and calendar plugins and I am salivating at the thought of be able to make use of your plugin. Especially knowing that it will be MU compatible…Wow!

If Staypress is ready for Beta, please let us know how to get involved.
