What platform do you use?

December 18th, 2007 Posted in Thoughts

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

This is probably not the place to ask this question, as most people who arrive at this site will be searching for WordPress plugins.

What platform do you use for you rental property site?

  • WordPress
  • MODx
  • CodeIgniter PHP
  • Custom written in PHP
  • ASP (or other Microsoft technology)
  • Joomla
  • Other…

My reasons for asking will (hopefully) become clearer early in the new year, but any information that you can provide on the technology you use (and if possible, why you chose it) will be extremely useful.

I use MODx. It is definitely the easiest to template and is extremely powerful, because it is more like a framework than a CMS. In fact, the next release of MODx will solidify this notion by basically building a CMS on the framework itself. The greatest thing about it is just its flexibility and some of its addons. You can use ditto for blogs, catalog listings, e-commerce, sitemaps, json. Wayfinder for any conceivable navigation scheme. FeedX for RSS feeds. Etc. I just built an e-commerce addon using GoogleCheckout that you can see at http://www.blueskyvineyard.com/dry-wine, and it was pretty easy to do in MODx. It would be great to be able to tie in the Booking Availability plug-in to similar checkout functionality.

I use Active Server Pages or ASP as this tech enables you to make dynamic and communicating web pages. It uses server-side scripting to dynamically produce web pages that are not affected by the type of browser the web site visitor is using. I use JScript (Microsoft’s version of JavaScript) or you can use VBScript as your scripting language.
